On Mothering: Wading Tides
— BY LAUREN TREND
Mothering, for me, can be likened to the ocean: wading tides, some steady, some still, ever lapping waves kissing the shore.
Seemingly simple things, done over and over again, that add up to, at times, an insurmountable weariness. A wave so big we’re not sure how we’ll survive it. But then it settles, and we’re wading white wash and calm seas, once again.
I knew that my work with self practice would prepare me for parenthood: the need for patience, emotional regulation, the practice of gratitude and and ever present echo in my ear serving as a reminder to remain present.
What I perhaps didn’t predict, was the crippling sense of love. The devotion that hits me deep within my core whenever I wonder about a life wherein she’s not my centre of gravity.
People warned me of the sleepless nights, that “my life would never be the same again”, and “not to worry - because the smiles will balance out the hard times”.
But what no one or nothing could prepare me for — was the love. The earth shattering, eye watering, moments of only me and her, in the middle of the night — love.
