People: Lucy Higgins
@lucybhiggins / @self.practice.studios
Name: Lucy Higgins
Occupation/Business/Creative Outlet: I get a lot of pleasure out of taking photos and sharing them, but photographer feels like it needs more training and qualification
Location: Mornington Peninsula, Australia
Star sign: Capricorn, the truest Capricorn there is.
Favourite Number: 8, I grew up being obsessed with number 4,8 and 16 and later took pity on 13 and declared it my favourite number. Now, however I’ve noticed that my partner and I keep choosing to live in homes with a number 8, I think 8 has pulled me back in.
First thing you did this morning? Helped my puppy, Roux, get up onto the bed, had my eyes kissed by one of our two kittens, Grey & Nero, then rolled over and asked my partner how she slept and what her dreams were about. I love to know what people dream about, I’m intensely curious about so many things other people seem to find banal.
What does 'wellbeing' mean to you? Roundness. Meeting and seeing the variety of needs and wants I have and addressing or catering to them. I have an autoimmune disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, which takes a lot out of me mentally and physically, and I’ve learned to change what I’m doing to ensure I feel the best or most comfortable I can.
Products found in your shower/by your bath? F.Miller Face Oil & Toning Mist; SANS Ceuticals Nourishing Hair Wash & Hydratant; Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub.
Three things that can always be found in your kitchen cupboard? Really good olive oil, coffee beans from Everyday Coffee or Market Lane, and some sort of specialty flour.
Favourite kitchen utensil? Tadafusa Santoku knife
Favourite travel destination? Of all time Paris, but most recently Byron and more specifically Raes on Wategos.
Currently reading? Reading ‘Dark Emu’ by Bruce Pascoe, and always thinking about ‘The Body Keeps the Score: Mind, brain and body in the transformation of trauma’ by Bessel Van Der Kolk, recommended to me by my friend Dan, when I was in the depths of a nine month process of being diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Both of these books are incredibly important, and I implore everyone to read them.
Currently browsing (.com)? Always always looking at secondhand point and shoot cameras via eBay, searching for new glassware for our home via Peter’s of Kensington (my mum and Aunt’s favourite website), and AFLW at least four times a day.
Favourite breakfast food? Croissant!
Three items in your wallet / bag? F.Miller lip balm, film that I need to take to get developed (always), and too many keys.
An album/mix that calms your nervous system? ‘Woman’ by Rhye
An album/mix that hypes you up? Chance the Rapper Essentials via Apple Music
Most commonly used apps on your phone? Notes, Podcasts and Instagram
Favourite form of movement/exercise? I started playing aussie rules football a few years ago and got really into the gym, particularly doing free weight exercises. When I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis this became harder, so machine work became my go-to when using a barbell, for instance, wasn’t possible because of my new shoulder mobility issues. My favourite form of exercise is weights, but it’s not a form of exercise that is always possible for me.
One thing you'd like to incorporate into your day/week that you're currently yet to? We moved to the beach two weeks ago, and I’d love to get into the routine of morning beach walks before work.
Nighttime rituals? If we have time after I come home from work, a walk on the beach with Roux, home to a cup of tea and a game of Uno - I've been trying to stay off my phone before bed and Uno usually helps with that, although sometimes it can hype me up a bit too much before sleep time.
A secret? I have a phobia of most fruits :)))
Something you're proud of? My growth and willingness to grow
I feel most creatively fulfilled when… I give myself space and time to work on anything from taking photos to painting to cooking, and not try to schedule it in like the Capricorn I am.
I'm currently working on… Self Practice Studios - watch this space!
This time last year, I wish I knew… that living outside of Melbourne is life changing in the best of ways.
I'm grateful for… my partner
